Andrew Johnson is a member of all Commissions, representing the Assembly Standing Committee as the General Secretary of the Uniting Church Assembly following his appointment in July 2024. Formerly the Project Lead until the 17th Assembly and the creation of the new Work Streams, he continues to provide high-level guidance across the Act2 Project and directs the strategic direction of one of the most transformational national change and engagement processes the Uniting Church has undertaken. In his role as General Secretary, Andrew leads the work of the National Assembly, including oversight of matters of doctrine, worship, governance, and discipline, while supporting senior leaders and staff across the Assembly and its three national agencies.
A committed member of the Uniting Church, Andrew has extensive experience in Church governance and strategy, including long-term service on the Assembly Standing Committee and Legal Reference Committee, membership of multiple Assembly Business Committees, and leadership as Director of UnitingCare Kippax in Canberra and Chair of UnitingWorld’s International Programs Committee. He has also contributed to social justice initiatives in Queensland and continues to support the Church’s mission through his work with the Act2 Project. Andrew worships at Gungahlin Uniting Church in Canberra and holds a Bachelor of Laws, a Bachelor of Science, a Graduate Diploma of Legal Practice, and a Graduate Diploma of Theology.
